If you want to learn to fly, gliding is the best place to start. The Air Cadets offers cadets the opportunity develop as far as their abilities will allow.
Unlike the flying course which is designed to reinforce what has been taught at Squadron, gliding courses allow cadets to learn all the skills they require to fly solo, and move on even further.
Cadets attend gliding courses at RAF Linton-on-Ouse near York. The GIC (Gliding Induction Course) teaches the cadets the basics of glider flying. Those showing the appropriate apptitude can then themselves go forward for further training by applying for a gliding scholarship which will ultimately have the cadet flying a solo circuit.
The Air Cadet Organisation uses the Grob 103 (Viking) and the Grob 109 T Mk1 (Vigilant).
The vigilant is a powered glider, which boasts excellant visibility and a side by side seating arrangement which creates a much better environment for staff pilots to train cadets.
